About this page

This page gives a short review of the fortification system, which was called "Mannerheim Line" during the Winter War.

One should note that this name was given to the main defense line on the Karelian Isthmus by the foreign journalists, who have been covering the war from Helsinki.

One should also note that the foreign journalists were covering the war from Helsinki because Marshal Mannerheim did not allow them to visit the front at the Isthmus, adding: "War is not Hollywood". This is why all reports were composed in Kamp hotel in Helsniki, and according to some sources - in the bar of the hotel.

The most famous strongpoints - Summakyla and Summajarvi are covered in greater detail than the other. The page only lists the strongpoints visited by the author in person. Information on the other defense areas will appear after I make visits there and get some materials on the concerned areas of the Mannerheim Line.

About the design

I tried to keep the design of the page as simple as possible and concentrate on the contents.

The main colors of the page are white and gray, the colors of snow and concrete. Some headings are red, the color of blood shed on both sides.

The front page of the whole site is painted by my sister, Tuyana Irincheeva, who is studying to be a fashion designer. The drawing is based on sketches made by an unknown Red Army officer in Muolaa and Salmenkaita defence areas. These sketches are preserved in the Museum of Leningrad Military district and are published in the book "Mannerheim line and the Finnish system of fortification on the Karelian Isthmus"

About the author

My name is Bair Irincheev, I am 24 years old, I was born and live in Saint-Petersburg. I work in the office eight hours a day (if you want, take a look at my CV), while I spend the rest of the time on things like studying military history, foreign languages, travelling, meeting my friends and sports.

Hmmm… normally I dress a bit differently. This is me at the reconstruction of the events of the Winter War at Suomussalmi. Our reconstruction club is here.

In any case, if you have questions, proposals, wishes or if you want to visit Mannerheim line, please write to irincheev@hotmail.com
