Bunker Sj3

This front-firing bunker was built in the 1920s and was covering the northern edge of Munasuo swamp. As most of the early fortifications of the first period of construction, it did not have a lot of reinforcement bars. On January 15, 1940 the bunker was destroyed by a direct artillery hit. The ceiling of the bunker collapsed.

On the picture below is the rear part of the bunker wirh remains of the wall. Few reinforcement rods can be seen. Some people have been trying to excavate the remains of the bunker, but it might take a bit of effort...

View over the anti-tank obrstacles on the northern edge of Munasuo swamp. Even in the cold winter of 1939-1940 the swamp did not freeze and did not support tanks. Red Army soldiers dubbed the swamp "the Valley of Death", as they had to attack on the open expance of the swamp without armour support.
