Sk11 "Peltola" bunker

The massive fortification is almost identical to the Sj5 Miljoonalinnake bunker in the adjacent Summajarvi sector; the only difference between the two bunekrs is absence of CP with armoured cupola in the central part of the bunker on Sk11. Peltola is just a name of a small village that was located next to the bunker.

  1. casemate with gunport for light MG and searchlight and armored cupola for artillery observer
  2. casemate with gunport for heavy MG and light MG
  3. barracks for bunker's garrison
  4. officers' rooms
  5. ammo storage
  6. WC

The bunker is located in some 200 meters north from Sk3 bunker. During combat the bunker was badly hit by heavy shells. The artillery fire on the bunker was so intensive that at some places almost completely wiped off 3 meters of stones and soil on top of the underground barraks of the bunker. The bunker is located on a hillslope, due to hits of heavy artillery shells, i was filled with water and is still filled with water, which stands some 40 sm high in the underground barraks. I was lucky enough to visit the bunker when water was still frozen. Picture of underground barraks, almost completely intact

The casemates of the bunker were blown up and the eastern one is nothing but a big explosion crater filled water with some lumps of concrete lying around. The western casemate has just the northern wall with two auxillary gunports remaining intact.

Someone put empty Finnish 7.62 mm cartridges on the inner part of the gunport. One can still read VPT (Valtion Patruunitehdas - State Ammunition Factory) abbreviation on the bottoms of the empty cartridges.
